How to Clean and Care for a Fabric Sofa

A fabric sofa is an investment — and with the right care, it can look beautiful for 10+ years. This guide covers routine maintenance, stain removal, and deep cleaning so your sofa stays fresh and comfortable.

Step 1: Check the Cleaning Code

Before you clean anything, check the sofa's care tag. Most fabric furniture has a cleaning code:

| Code | Meaning | What to Use | |------|---------|-------------| | W | Water-based cleaners only | Water, mild soap, water-based upholstery cleaner | | S | Solvent-based cleaners only | Dry cleaning solvent only — no water | | WS | Water or solvent | Either water-based or solvent-based cleaner | | X | Professional cleaning only | Vacuum only — no water or solvents |

Never use water on an S-coded fabric — it will leave water stains and can damage the fibers.

Step 2: Routine Maintenance (Weekly)

Vacuum

Use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum to remove dust, crumbs, and pet hair weekly. This prevents dirt from settling into the fabric fibers and causing premature wear. Don't forget the crevices between cushions.

Fluff Cushions

Fluff and rotate cushions weekly to distribute wear evenly. Flip reversible cushions (if yours are reversible) so both sides wear at the same rate.

Brush Pet Hair

If you have pets, use a lint roller or rubber glove to remove hair. A rubber glove dragged across the fabric creates static that lifts hair easily.

Step 3: Spot Cleaning Common Stains

Coffee and Tea

  1. Blot (don't rub) with a dry cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible
  2. Mix 1 cup warm water with 1 teaspoon mild dish soap
  3. Dab the stain with the solution using a clean cloth
  4. Blot with a dry cloth to absorb moisture
  5. Repeat until the stain lifts

Food and Grease

  1. Scrape off any solid residue with a dull knife
  2. Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch on the grease spot to absorb oil — let sit 15 minutes
  3. Vacuum up the powder
  4. Apply a water-based upholstery cleaner (for W/WS codes) or dry solvent (for S codes)
  5. Blot until clean

Ink

  1. Dab with rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball (test on a hidden area first)
  2. Blot — don't rub — to lift the ink
  3. Repeat with fresh cotton balls until the ink stops transferring

Pet Accidents

  1. Blot up as much liquid as possible
  2. Apply an enzymatic cleaner (like Nature's Miracle) — it breaks down the proteins that cause odor
  3. Let it sit for the time recommended on the bottle
  4. Blot dry and let air-dry completely

Step 4: Deep Cleaning (Every 6–12 Months)

For a full deep clean, you have two options:

Option A: Steam Clean (W/WS Coded Fabrics Only)

  1. Rent or buy an upholstery steam cleaner
  2. Use the manufacturer's recommended cleaning solution
  3. Work in small sections — spray, then immediately extract
  4. Don't over-wet the fabric; extract as much moisture as possible
  5. Let dry completely (6–12 hours) before using

Option B: Professional Cleaning

For valuable or delicate sofas (especially S-coded or X-coded fabrics), professional upholstery cleaning is worth the cost. They have the right solvents and equipment to clean without damaging the fabric.

Step 5: Protect Your Sofa

Apply Fabric Protector

After cleaning, apply a fabric protector spray (like Scotchgard) to repel future stains. Reapply every 6–12 months or after deep cleaning.

Use Throws and Covers

A decorative throw blanket over the arms and seats protects high-wear areas. Washable slipcovers are a great option if you have kids or pets.

Keep It Out of Direct Sunlight

UV rays fade fabric over time. Position your sofa away from direct sun, or use curtains/blinds to filter light during peak hours.

Control Humidity

Too-dry air can make fabric brittle; too-humid air can cause mildew. Aim for 30–50% indoor humidity.

When to Replace vs. Clean

  • Sagging cushions that don't recover after fluffing → the foam is worn out; cleaning won't help
  • Persistent odors that survive deep cleaning → the padding may be saturated; replacement may be needed
  • Torn fabric or broken springs → repair or reupholster, or replace
  • Fading or staining → cleaning or professional dyeing can extend the life
